Message from the President

Dear ICSA Community members,

2020 has been an eventful year. The advent of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has disrupted our lives and our work for about one year, and many of us are still trapped in the lockdowns, school closures and travel ban amid the pandemic. Undoubtedly, the consequences of the COVID-10 pandemic will be far-reaching, and the post-pandemic world will be different and full of uncertainties. On the other hand, we have never felt so necessary to be connected and the importance of family, community, and the nation-state in coping with the difficulties and challenges in the times of isolation and uncertainties ahead.

The ICSA community continues to thrive in 2020. Following the success of the second annual meeting last year in New York University, we planned to hold the ICSA annual meeting at University of Oxford on July 10-11, 2020. Had the meeting happened, it would be another historical record in the development of the ICSA to become truly “international.” Despite the cancellation of our summer meeting, we successfully held a virtual annual meeting on November 20-21, 2020. Digital connectivity enables us to easily bring together scholars and students around the world for the one-and-half day meeting.

We were honored to have Prof. Marty Whyte of Harvard University to deliver the keynote speech, “China’s Economic Development History and the ‘China Dream’: An Overview with Personal Reflections,” and Prof. Nan Lin of Duke University to speak on in the session of Graduate Student Paper Award. Mr. Yifan Shen, a PhD student in sociology at Brown University, USA, received the 2020 Nan Lin Award, for his paper “The Nonlinear Linkage between Earnings Homogamy and Earnings Inequality between Married Couples.” Congratulation to Yifan!

With the committed time from a few members and the financial and administrative support from the HKUST Center for Applied Social and Economic Research, the ICSA now launched a new and comprehensive website at (http://www.icsa-sociology.org), where we can manage membership and conference paper submissions, share job opportunities and news of interests to our community. I strongly encourage all of you to register and visit the ICSA website to receive the update news.

All these achievements were not possible without the support from the ICSA board and many more active members. Thank you!

We are in the process of restructuring the governance structure of the ICSA to encourage wider participation, to serve our members better, and to make the association more stable and sustainable. As part of such effort, Prof. Jun Xu (Ball State University, USA) has kindly agreed to serve as the Newsletter Editor (as a non-board member) for a five-year term from 2020 to 2024. Miss Rui Jie Peng, PhD candidate in Sociology at University of Texas, Austin, will volunteer to assist Prof. Xu in editing the Newsletters and maintaining the newly created twitter account (https://twitter.com/ICSA60613379). Thank you both, Jun and Rui Jie, for your willingness to serve the ICSA community!

Finally, I myself am moving to NYU Shanghai and the new research center (CASER) at NYU Shanghai is committed to providing the support to the ICSA to fulfill her mission even after the Torch is passed to my successor. I’m proud to be part of this community. Let’s strive to make it even better for the years to come!

Merry Christmas!

May 2021 bring you and your beloved ones health, comfort, and prosperity!

Sincerely

Xiaogang Wu
