About the Organizers

The International Chinese Sociological Association (ICSA) is a nonprofit organization registered in both California, USA, and Hong Kong SAR, China. It aims to promote sociological and related research on Chinese societies, cultures, and populations worldwide.

On January 14-15, 2027, the International Chinese Sociological Association (ICSA) and the School of Ethnology and Sociology, Yunnan University, will jointly convene the Inaugural ICSA Winter Forum. Under the theme “Social Stratification in a Changing World,” the Forum invites paper submissions from scholars worldwide.

About the Co-Organizers

The School of Ethnology and Sociology at Yunnan University traces its scholarly heritage to 1938, when Wu Wenzao, a sociologist from Yenching University, was appointed to establish the Department of Sociology and founded the Yenching-Yunnan Station for Sociological Research (known as "Kuige"). Distinguished scholars including Fei Xiaotong and Francis Hsu completed classic ethnographic studies here, while Fang Guoyu established the Southwest Culture Research Center, advancing historical and geographical studies of China's borderlands through archival research. This convergence of functionalist and historical approaches formed a distinctive scholarly tradition.

The School offers doctoral programs in ethnology, sociology, and social work, with two postdoctoral research stations. Its ethnology program has consistently received A+ ratings in China's national discipline assessments and was selected for the national “Double First-Class” initiative in 2017. The School hosts the Ministry of Education's Key Research Center for Ethnic Minorities in Southwest China's Borderlands and other national-level research platforms.

Situated in Southwest China's borderlands, the School has developed distinctive research strengths in ethnic groups of Southwest China, ethnic history, transnational ethnicity, frontier governance, ethnic relations, and anthropology of Southeast and South Asia, advancing the disciplines of ethnology, sociology, anthropology, and social work through rigorous fieldwork and comparative research.

Call for Papers

Rapid changes in population, education, technology, labor markets, family life, and migration are reshaping individual opportunities and socioeconomic positions. Under the theme “Social Stratification in a Changing World,” the Forum examines emerging trends and mechanisms of stratification and mobility across diverse social contexts.

The ICSA Program Committee welcomes submissions related to the conference theme, as well as theoretical and empirical work on other topics. Papers employing comparative perspectives or interdisciplinary approaches are especially encouraged. Participants may submit either a full paper or an extended abstract, and please include the names, institutional affiliations, and email addresses of all authors.

Submission Guidelines

The online submission deadline for the Inaugural ICSA Winter Forum is November 15, 2026. Participants may submit either a full paper or an extended abstract, in Chinese or English.
